The compass at the top of the screen shows the location of your objectives for the current level. As you move around, secondary icons will appear as either squares, up arrows, or down arrows. These indicate that objective's height relative to your current position, with the up arrows meaning an objective is above you, down arrows signifying an objective is below you, and squares meaning that an objective is on the same height as you are.
